Give Your Digestion A Helping Hand

If you’re feeling bloated and sluggish after meals, you may be experiencing some digestive problems that require a doctor’s visit. But you also may just be suffering from some diet-related issues, and that’s something you can take care of all by yourself.

First, look at how much you’re eating and when. For example, eating a heavy meal late at night is a prescription for lots of tossing and turning, so try to have dinner early in the evening. And keep snacking to a minimum afterward.

It’s also a good idea to take a good look at your overall diet. Do you have plenty of gut-healthy foods like yogurt and leafy greens on your plate? How about fiber? Most of us, even when we’re trying, don’t get as much of that as we should. And while there’s nothing wrong with the occasional pizza binge, it’s all about balance: If you’re having a salty, fatty main course, pair it with a green salad.

Last but not least, make sure you’re getting plenty of water. Yes, there’s water in coffee and tea, but there’s also plenty of caffeine, which sends you to the bathroom and keeps you from retaining any fluid. Try to drink at least eight glasses of water a day.

Make sensible decisions about your diet, and you’ll reap the benefits of regular, healthy digestion.
